DesignOne of my favorite walks on campus is the path in between Engineering East and the Frank E. Pilling Building. It's serene, dotted with plant material, and tends not to be too congested. It also meanders between the buildings that provide nice shade on a hot day. With that being said, I only really walk this path during the day. The qualities that I have described, in addition to poor lighting, are reasons why it might feel unsafe to walk at night. In Cal Poly's defense, the lighting that is offered in this walkway may meet code, but that does not necessarily make it feel safe for the user. Any college campus takes safety very seriously, and therefore should consider making small changes to improve safety at night.
Below I have included a conceptual redesign of the walkway, employing design features found in my research to improve this experience at night. The design I generated was a quick one-hour charrette, as an illustrative component to show the concepts from my research in a plan drawing. |
